Happy Veterans Day, a day early. I have the day off from work today because the city celebrates legal holidays that fall on Saturdays, on the day before.
We will be in Boston for the day. I wonder if we will see any war demonstrations? Last year the Waterville Area Bridges for Peace and Justice placed 2,000 small, white flags in Veterans Memorial Park to commemorate the already 2,000 dead American soldiers in Iraq. On the eve of Veterans Day some protestors, veterans and non-veterans, were angered by the group and their actions and started to remove the flags or tear them up. This prompted the Waterville police to arrest 5 people. You can read about it here. I think the sight of the flags is humbling, not unlike seeing the crosses at the American cemetery in Colleville-sur Mer, France. I'm not the most overtly partriotic person, but I do consider myself appreciative.

The American cemetery in Cambridge (UK) is pretty special too. It's our Remembrance Day here on Sunday. Like you, I'm not a particularly patriotic person - but I am, very much, when it comes to this. And I reckon it's a very small thing to ask for anti-war protestors and other groups to keep silent on that day. They should show some respect.
Honestly, listen to me - I sound like some old duffer....
