Dark places

I met an old friend the other night in Waterville, to catch up after a few months of not seeing one another. I've known her since 7th grade. We decided to meet at the Railroad Square Cinema parking lot. It's a place of many memories. The old cinema, which burned some time while I was in college, was rebuilt in the same lot. My memory of the old cinema includes watching lots of saucy foreign films, in the overly dark cinema. It was so dark that if you arrived late, it was impossible to see anything once the film started. The new cinema is wonderful. They now have more than one screen, fabulous popcorn and comfy seats. The other old cinema in town in now an evangelical church.

While in Waterville, with few choices for decent places to eat, my friend chose You Know Who's Pub for us. This is a place of legend, a destination we frequented often after going to see a movie. My friend and and agreed that what once seemed impressive to us is really just a basement dive. Still, the beer was cold and the nachos were good. It was difficult to read the menu when we sat down, due to the low light. Then the waitress says, "It's a little bright in here" and she lowered the scant light. I guess that's what happens when you are stuck in a dark basement for half the day.
